Severe Weather Alert: Strong Northeasterly Winds Set to Impact the Country
A low-pressure system is moving in from the southeast, and it’s bringing a notable shift in conditions across Iceland. The Icelandic Met Office has warned that northeasterly winds will strengthen throughout the day, with the worst of it expected overnight.
What’s the Story?
- A substantial low-pressure system is advancing from the southeast, bringing increasingly strong northeasterly winds.
- The Öræfi region, nestled beneath the Vatnajökull glacier in South Iceland, is bracing for particularly fierce winds and stormy weather. Meanwhile, the northeast can expect comparatively milder conditions.
- Nationwide, forecasts indicate a mix of snow, sleet, and rain, with temperatures potentially reaching a balmy 9°C—warmest in the south.
In the Öræfi region, people should be ready for a rough stretch. Winds are likely to turn especially gusty there, and while the west may see some light showers during the day, heavier and more persistent rain is expected to move in this evening and continue through the night.
Come Sunday, winds should ease off gradually across southern and eastern parts of the country. The northwest is a different story — strong gusts could hang around well into the day. Wintery weather is expected across much of Iceland, with snow, sleet, and rain in the mix. The south and southwest should start to dry out by afternoon, at least.
Temperatures will tick up slightly over the next few days, sitting around 9°C. That’s not exactly warm, but it takes some of the edge off — especially in the south.
Keep an eye on conditions and stay safe out there.
