UNESCO Honors Swimming Pool Culture as Cultural Heritage

Iceland’s swimming pool culture has officially joined UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The recognition was confirmed yesterday at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, India, following an 18-month evaluation process.

The inscription is a nod to something Icelanders have always known: the local pool is far more than a place to swim laps. These are public spaces where people of every age and background turn up to exercise, catch up with neighbours, or simply sit in the hot pot and let the week dissolve. There’s a quiet equality to it — no dress code, no hierarchy, just warm water and whoever happens to be there.

In North Iceland, that tradition takes many forms. Small towns have their own local pools, and the region also draws visitors to one-of-a-kind spots like a beer spa with outdoor hot tubs. Three geothermal lagoons — Earth Lagoon, Geosea, and Forest Lagoon — each offer something distinct. Anyone curious about Iceland’s bathing and wellness traditions will find plenty to explore up north.

Getting onto UNESCO’s list isn’t straightforward. The process demands genuine participation from the people who actually live the tradition, not just officials filing paperwork. Community meetings were held around the country to present the nomination and hear what people thought. Swimmers, clubs, and groups from across Iceland fed their experiences and stories into the process. The Icelandic Swimming Association and UMFÍ, the Icelandic Youth Association, both threw their support behind the nomination — a collective effort to make sure this corner of Icelandic life gets the recognition it deserves.
