On December 9, Minister of Education and Children and People’s Party MP Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson went on medical leave, RÚV reported.
The minister has recently undergone medical tests at the National Hospital and requires heart surgery, scheduled for early 2026, according to a government announcement.
Minister of Infrastructure and People’s Party MP Eyjólfur Ármannsson will take over Guðmundur’s duties while he is away. Deputy People’s Party MP Þóra Gunnlaug Briem will fill his parliamentary seat in the meantime.
Speaking to RÚV, Prime Minister and Social Democrats chair Kristrún Frostadóttir and Minister of Social Affairs and Housing and People’s Party chair Inga Sæland both said the current ministerial organisation would remain unchanged.
Guðmundur Ingi took over the ministry in March 2025, following the uncovering of a scandal involving former minister of education and children and People’s Party MP Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir.
