Every year, former President Barack Obama shares his picks for the best music, books, and films — a window into what he’s actually been listening to and reading. This year, an Icelandic artist made the cut.
In a post on social media today, Obama revealed his latest playlist, and Laufey’s “Silver Lining” is on it. She’s in good company: the list also includes “Luther,” featuring Kendrick Lamar and SZA, “Nice to Each Other” by Olivia Dean, “Ordinary” from Alex Warren, and “Sexo, Violencia Y Llantas” by Rosalía.
Laufey has become one of Iceland’s most talked-about musicians in a remarkably short time. She’s currently on tour and will close out her run of shows with a concert in Kópavogur. The recognition keeps coming too — she’s already taken home a Grammy and is nominated again for her latest album, “A Matter of Time.”
On the books side, Obama’s favourites this year include “Paper Girl” by Beth Macy, “1929” by Andrew Ross Sorkin, and “The Look” by Michelle Obama — a choice that probably surprised no one.
Topping his film list is “One Battle After Another,” featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, with “Sinners” close behind. He also watched “Jay Kelly,” “The Secret Agent,” and “Hamnet.”
