easyJet has announced an extension of its winter flight schedule from London Gatwick to Akureyri, pushing service through April. The route had originally been due to wrap up in March, and the news came out during a conference held in Akureyri back in November.
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager, outlined what the changes mean in practice. Flights will now run through April, and the airline intends to restart the route in early October next year — effectively tacking two months onto the winter schedule at both ends. Bookings for the October flights will open at the start of 2025. Gayward couldn’t make it to the conference in person, so she delivered her remarks via a recorded address, which you can watch below.
“We are thrilled to announce this enhancement to our offerings and to provide our customers with more travel options,” Gayward remarked. “The demand for journeys to North Iceland has been steadily rising year after year, particularly for flights from London Gatwick. The recent addition of flights from Manchester also helps us connect with an even broader customer base in Northern England.”
On the Manchester route, Gayward said they’d be watching demand carefully. She was upbeat about its prospects, pointing to a strong rise in interest for winter travel from the UK as the reason for adding flights during that period.
Arnheiður Jóhannsdóttir, Managing Director of Visit North Iceland, welcomed the news. “The availability of flights during autumn and spring months presents exciting travel opportunities for both British and Icelandic travelers,” she said. “Typically, April sees a slowdown in tourism in North Iceland, so this extension not only prolongs the season but also allows us to provide comprehensive services and mitigate seasonal fluctuations.”
