Katla is widely regarded as one of Iceland’s most dangerous volcanoes. It sits beneath roughly 700 metres of glacial ice, and when it erupts, it generates catastrophic glacial outburst floods — jökulhlaups — capable of reshaping the landscape in hours. The fact that it has now gone a full century without a major eruption is, by Katla’s own historical standards, an unusually long silence.

The volcano’s last confirmed eruption occurred in 1918. That event sent a floodwater surge estimated at several times the combined flow of the Amazon and Mississippi rivers racing across the Mýrdalssandur plain toward the sea. It reshaped the southern coastline in a matter of days.

Why Katla’s 100-year silence worries scientists

Historically, Katla has erupted roughly every 40 to 80 years. A full century without a significant event is well outside the norm, and authorities have long listed Katla as a high-priority monitoring target. Þórsmörk, the celebrated highland valley to the north of Katla, and the farmlands stretching east toward Kirkjubæjarklaustur would also face serious risk depending on where a future eruption breaks through the ice. The ring road — Route 1 — runs directly across the outwash plain, and any major jökulhlaup would cut the country’s main highway within minutes of an eruption beginning.

Civil protection planning in Iceland has grown considerably more sophisticated since 1918. The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management — Almannavarnir — maintains real-time alert systems, and the Icelandic Met Office issues formal hazard assessments that feed directly into national emergency protocols. Colour-coded aviation alerts are also issued when volcanic unrest is detected, given the proximity of Katla’s eruption column potential to North Atlantic flight corridors.

How Iceland monitors Katla today

Monitoring technology at Katla has advanced well beyond anything available in 1918. GPS ground deformation data, satellite radar interferometry, and continuous seismic analysis give scientists a far more detailed picture of what is happening inside the volcano than previous generations could access. Earthquake swarms beneath the caldera are tracked in near real-time and published openly by the Icelandic Met Office.

Despite that, predicting exactly when Katla will next erupt remains beyond current science. Volcanoes do not follow schedules. The centenary of the 1918 eruption is a marker, but scientists are careful not to treat an anniversary as evidence of imminent activity. What it does represent is a reminder that Katla is an active system in a geologically restless country — and that the silence of the last hundred years will end, at some point, without warning sufficient for anything beyond the protocols already in place.

The Icelandic Met Office continues to publish regular updates on seismic and geothermal activity at Katla. How the volcano behaves in the months and years ahead will determine whether this centenary is remembered as a quiet milestone or the calm before something far larger.
