Gunmen Kidnap Schoolchildren in Nigeria

Early Monday morning, armed attackers stormed a local school, firing indiscriminately before making off with dozens of students. Police confirmed in their statement that a security guard was injured during the assault.

By the time authorities reached the scene, the group — believed to be linked to a criminal gang — had already broken through the school’s perimeter and abducted 25 students, taking them to an unknown location.

Military units, police, and local civil guards are now combing the area in search of the missing children. School kidnappings for ransom have become a grim pattern in northern Nigeria, where various armed groups operate across the region. The northwest has been hit particularly hard — gangs there don’t just seize children for ransom. They also raid villages, steal livestock, and burn homes to the ground.
