Puffins Return to Grímsey: A Sign of Spring in Iceland
As winter wanes, the first Atlantic puffins have made their appearance on Grímsey, the northernmost island of Iceland. This seasonal arrival heralds the arrival of spring, with these charming birds emerging to reclaim their nesting grounds.
Last week, keen-eyed observers spotted puffins on the cliffs near Grímsey’s iconic lighthouse. The sightings were confirmed by the Municipality of Akureyri, following reports from local residents who delighted in witnessing the vibrant birds.
The retreat of snow cover, a consequence of the recent warmer weather, has made nesting burrows more accessible for the puffins. This environmental shift seems to align perfectly with their migration cycle, allowing them to settle in just in time for the breeding season.
Sisters Unnur and Halla Ingólfsdóttir were among the lucky individuals who reported seeing the puffins congregating on the island’s southern cliffs. Their arrival coincides with the return of other migratory species, including golden plovers, Arctic terns, and snipes, all of which contribute to Grímsey’s rich tapestry of avian life.
Puffins, often regarded as Iceland’s most beloved summer birds, typically nest in burrows along coastal cliffs. As spring unfolds, they will engage in breeding activities, adding to the island’s bustling wildlife scene.
