A fire broke out this evening in a large open garbage container outside the old fire station in Keflavík. Early reports suggest a fireworks cake may have started it, though that has not been confirmed.
Herbert Eyjólfsson, supervisor at Suðurnes Fire Protection, spoke to a local news agency about the incident.
“The situation was manageable,” he said. “It was situated well away from any structures, so there was no risk to nearby homes. We had no trouble extinguishing it.”
Reports had mentioned a Christmas tree among the items in the container, but firefighters found no sign of one when they arrived.
“It’s possible it could have burned down, but we can’t say for certain,” Herbert added.
