On Friday at 3:20 p.m., a serious bus accident took place in central Stockholm, drawing an immediate police response. The bus, running a regular route between Östra station and Vaxholm, hit a bus shelter, clipped several trees, and finally struck a pole.
The vehicle carried on for roughly 40 meters along the pavement before it stopped.
Six people were injured in the crash. Three of them did not survive. The other three were taken to hospital, with two reported to be in stable condition.
All the Victims are Women
By Monday, police confirmed that the three who died were women aged between 55 and 65. One had worked at the Public Prosecutor’s Office; another was an employee of Karolinska University Hospital.
The families of the victims have been notified, according to police. Officers are still trying to contact the relatives of the third woman, who is thought to live in another European country.
The bus driver was arrested and held on suspicion of causing death and bodily harm. By Saturday he had been released, with police saying there is currently no evidence that the incident was deliberate.
