The US and Ukrainian delegations convened in Geneva, Switzerland today to discuss the contentious peace plan put forward by the US to Ukrainian leaders last Friday.
Following the talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed reporters, declaring the meeting a considerable success. “It was a very good day,” he remarked, while acknowledging that further efforts are still needed.
According to a joint statement issued by the American and Ukrainian governments, diplomats worked collaboratively to refine the peace plan during their discussions today.
Initially, American officials had presented a 28-point peace framework to Ukrainian leaders in Kiev. However, there was evident dissatisfaction among European leaders, including those from Ukraine, particularly regarding stipulations that called for territorial concessions, a ban on joining NATO, and limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces.
In a promising indication of progress, the presidential statement noted some shifts in this stance. “Both sides reiterated that any future agreement must fully respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure a sustainable and just peace. Following the talks, the parties submitted an updated and improved peace plan,” the statement read.
In a social media post last night, US President Donald Trump expressed frustration, labeling the Ukrainians as ungrateful for American support. Yet, the joint statement emphasized that the Ukrainian delegation had reiterated its gratitude to the United States and specifically to President Trump for his relentless efforts to facilitate an end to the conflict and minimize loss of life.
Furthermore, both parties have agreed to continue refining their proposals in the coming days and will maintain close communication with European nations as the process unfolds.
“The final decisions within this framework will rest with the presidents of Ukraine and the United States,” the statement concluded.
Although President Trump had initially set a deadline for the Ukrainians to approve the draft by Thursday, Rubio has indicated that Trump is now “quite satisfied” with the outcome of today’s discussions.
