Willum Þór Þórsson has revealed he is contemplating a bid for the chairmanship of the Progressive Party, according to a report by MBL. This spring, he was elected president of the Sports and Olympic Association of Iceland in a significant election. While he acknowledges the challenge of stepping into a new role so soon, he has received considerable encouragement from members of the Progressive Party to pursue the chairmanship.
Current chairman Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson has announced that he will step down during the upcoming party congress, marking the end of his nine-year tenure at the helm.
In a recent interview with Morgunblaðið, Willum expressed a sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to the party’s future. “Despite the awkward timing, I feel it’s crucial to consider this opportunity,” he said. “I never sought this position; now, I’m working to align myself with its demands.”
Willum has a significant political background, serving in parliament for the Progressive Party from 2013 to 2016 and again from 2017 to 2024. He also held the role of Minister of Health from 2021 until recently, though he did not secure a seat in the last general election.
