If you’re in search of a truly unique travel experience, look no further than the Galaxy Pod Hostel in Reykjavík, Iceland. At first glance, this establishment appears modest; however, step inside and you’ll find yourself immersed in a whimsical, spaceship-themed environment complete with futuristic ‘pod’ beds.
Benjamin Pothier, a 46-year-old scientist and spacesuit tester from France, recently stayed at the hostel and shared with Metro.co.uk that it feels “straight out of a science fiction movie.” Images from his visit showcase the dormitories bathed in an otherworldly blue glow at night, with sleeping capsules that could easily belong in a Star Wars film, distinguished by their airlock-style doors.
Reflecting on his experience, Pothier commented, “The pods are truly remarkable and surprisingly comfortable.” While the hotel is located a bit off the beaten path—residing in a nondescript building that also houses a car dealership—he described the arrival as rather unexpected. “After taking the elevator, you’ll find yourself in the hostel lobby, which doubles as a communal gathering space.”
Despite the novelty of the pods, Pothier noted that the rest of the hostel offers a relaxed, vibrant atmosphere typical of a youth hostel. Guests have access to a communal kitchen and dining area, restrooms, and a bar in the lobby that encourages social interaction.
Nightly rates start at ISK 5,800 (approximately £33) for accommodation in a spacious 24-person room. Opened in late 2015, the Galaxy Pod Hostel is the brainchild of Sverrir Guðmundsson, who drew inspiration from a memorable scene in the 1997 film “The Fifth Element,” where characters portrayed by Bruce Willis and Mila Jovovich sleep in capsule beds aboard a spacecraft. “Our pods are much cozier,” he remarked, adding that this playful concept resonated with him. “There’s a certain romance in this kind of accommodation, especially in a place like Iceland, which often feels otherworldly.”
Pothier spent three nights at the hostel before embarking on an expedition into the Icelandic wilderness, where he would contribute to a project focused on creating livable habitats for space exploration. He expressed a desire to return to the Galaxy Pod Hostel, having found it “clean, comfortable, and memorable.”
With a commendable 4.5 ‘excellent’ rating on TripAdvisor, this hostel has garnered praise from visitors. One reviewer, Sólveig Péturs, highlighted its appeal for families. “It’s more than just a hostel; it’s an experience!” she noted after a stay with her nine-year-old daughter, who had dreamed of sleeping in space for her birthday. “I recommend arriving early to settle in, capture all those space-themed memories, and enjoy a movie on your private pod TV.”
