A fire erupted this evening in a large open garbage container located outside the old fire station in Keflavík. Preliminary reports suggest that a fireworks cake may have ignited the blaze, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Herbert Eyjólfsson, supervisor at Suðurnes Fire Protection, shared insights during a conversation with a local news agency.
“The situation was manageable,” he noted. “It was situated well away from any structures, so there was no risk to nearby homes. We had no trouble extinguishing it.”
While reports mentioned a Christmas tree among the items in the container, the fire brigade found no evidence of one.
“It’s possible it could have burned down, but we can’t say for certain,” Herbert added, maintaining a measured tone amid the calm aftermath of the incident.
