President Trump Announces Ground Operations to Combat Drug Trafficking from Venezuela
In a video message shared with U.S. troops ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, President Donald Trump declared that military ground operations to curb drug trafficking from Venezuela will commence “very soon.” His remarks come as a significant number of service members are stationed aboard ships positioned off the Venezuelan coast.
Trump emphasized that conducting operations on land is typically more straightforward than executing maneuvers at sea, though he noted that nearly all smuggling efforts have been effectively halted in recent weeks. The U.S. Navy, he indicated, has been on heightened alert along the coastline, aiming to thwart these illegal activities.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government has countered these assertions, accusing the United States of orchestrating plans to destabilize President Nicolas Maduro’s administration. Trump, however, maintains that Maduro is at the heart of a thriving drug cartel, a claim that reinforces the U.S. government’s refusal to acknowledge Maduro’s contested victory in last year’s elections.
The situation in the region has escalated dramatically, with reports indicating at least 83 fatalities resulting from over 20 attacks on suspected smuggling vessels across the Caribbean and Pacific. Yet, as of now, U.S. authorities have not presented concrete evidence linking these incidents to drug smuggling or demonstrating that American interests are in jeopardy.
