Inga Sæland Defends Housing Package Amid Concerns Over Rising Rental Prices

Inga Sæland, the Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, has pushed back firmly against suggestions that the government’s latest housing measures will push rental prices higher. She made her position clear during an impromptu question period in Alþingi, responding to a query from Ólafur Adolfsson, a member of the Independence Party.

Adolfsson raised concerns about the first housing package, zeroing in on a proposed tax increase on rental income. “Is the minister not worried that this might inadvertently drive rental prices up?” he asked, pointing to a bill from the Minister of Finance that was due for discussion later that same day. He also pressed Sæland on whether she believes keeping rental prices as low as possible matters — and whether she would back measures that could cause them to rise.

Sæland was not having it. “I don’t foresee any negative consequences from this housing package leading to increased rental prices,” she said.

She went on to explain her reasoning. “I don’t think it’s detrimental to reduce incentives for larger investors who currently dominate our construction market.” Her concern, she made clear, is with individuals snapping up multiple properties to corner rental markets. “Preventing this kind of accumulation should not push rental prices up,” she insisted.

Sæland also indicated that government ministers are aligned on the issue, signalling her intention to support the finance minister’s bill when it came to the floor.

The exchange reflects the broader tension the government is trying to manage — curbing investor dominance in the housing market without making life harder for ordinary renters in the process.
