Progressives in Skagafjörður Propose Willum Þór Þórsson for Party Chair

The Progressive Party’s leadership race is taking shape, and in Skagafjörður, there’s a clear favourite. Senior figures in the region are throwing their weight behind Willum Þór Þórsson, and the board of the local Progressive Association has formally invited him to put his name forward at the party congress scheduled for February 2026.

In their resolution, the board stated, “The Progressive Association of Skagafjörður calls on Willum Þór Þórsson to seek the position of chairman of the Progressive Party at the forthcoming party congress. We recognize him as an experienced politician who commands respect and trust across the nation. With a compelling vision and a keen sense of justice, we believe he is well-equipped to steer the Progressive Party in a new direction, actualizing our ideals and priorities.”

The push for new leadership follows Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson’s announcement at the central committee meeting nearly a month ago that he would not seek re-election. His departure from the top job became all but inevitable after the party’s poor showing in the recent parliamentary elections. Guðni Ágústsson, a former chair and minister, was among those who spoke up at the time, pressing for a leadership renewal and urging Sigurður Ingi to reconsider his position.

Willum stepped away from parliament during last year’s elections and has since been elected president of the Sports and Olympic Association of Iceland. Speaking to Morgunblaðið yesterday, he said he is weighing up a run for the chairmanship — though he was candid about the fact that stepping into any new role comes with its own complications.

This story will be updated as developments arise.
