New Accommodation Options Set to Transform Akureyri’s Hospitality Scene
Travelers and tour operators can look forward to a wealth of new lodging choices in Akureyri and its surroundings. This spring, two new hotels have been announced for Akureyri, while a third is on the brink of completion in Grenivík, just a thirty-minute drive from the city. With the increase in direct flights to North Iceland, available year-round, coupled with a surge in overall tourism, demand for hotel rooms is on the rise.
Forest Lagoon Hotel
A striking new hotel, featuring 120 rooms, is currently under construction near the Forest Lagoon, situated just outside of Akureyri. This establishment will include a restaurant, a conference hall, and, importantly, a seamless connection to the Forest Lagoon, a local favorite among residents and tourists alike. The hotel is set to open its doors by the end of 2027, alongside an expansion of the lagoon itself.
Höfði Lodge – Viking Heliskiing
Over in Grenivík, the owners of Viking Heliskiing are crafting the Höfði Lodge, slated to open in 2026. Spanning a generous 5,500 square meters, the lodge will feature 40 luxurious rooms, including four suites, along with a restaurant, spa, wellness facilities, and various lounge and meeting areas.
This lodge aims to cater to adventure seekers, offering an array of recreational activities such as heliskiing, ski touring, mountaineering, biking, snowmobiling, hiking, whale watching, horseback riding, and even hunting and fly-fishing. Perched atop a 50-meter-high cliff, Höfði Lodge promises breathtaking views of the ocean, with the majestic mountains of Látraströnd and the Troll Peninsula in the backdrop.
Hotel Akureyri Expansion
In a noteworthy development, Hotel Akureyri has recently completed an expansion, bringing its total room count to 140. The new addition features a modern reception area and a cozy café bar, enhancing the overall guest experience.
Hotel Skáld – Curio Collection by Hilton
Lastly, a new gem is set to shine in Akureyri: Hotel Skáld, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. This hotel will celebrate Icelandic poetry, with ‘Skáld’ being the Icelandic term for poet. Nestled in the heart of Akureyri, the hotel will offer 70 well-appointed rooms and is poised to increase accommodation options in the capital of North Iceland. Marking a significant milestone, it will be the first Hilton property outside of Reykjavík. The Curio collection aims to create a unique narrative through exceptional architecture, design, culinary experiences, and curated activities. Hotel Skáld is expected to open in the summer of 2026, promising an engaging stay for all who visit.
With these exciting developments on the horizon, Akureyri is poised to solidify its status as a key destination in North Iceland, attracting even more visitors eager to explore its rich natural beauty and vibrant culture.
