Mohammed Bin Salman Visits the White House

Historic Meeting on the Horizon: Trump and Saudi Crown Prince to Reconnect

In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump is poised to welcome Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House this week. This meeting marks the first formal engagement between the two leaders since the highly controversial Khashoggi murder in 2018, raising eyebrows over the expected diplomatic discourse.

Trump has indicated a grand reception will be on the agenda, portraying the visit as an opportunity to strengthen ties with the Kingdom. “We do more than meet,” he remarked recently, adding, “We honor Saudi Arabia and the crown prince.”

The crown prince’s White House visit signifies more than just a political handshake; it is a strategic move for both leaders. While this marks his first visit to Washington in over seven years, it coincides with crucial discussions surrounding energy, security, trade, and technology—topics highlighted by Reuters ahead of the meeting.

However, it remains unlikely that the specter of Jamal Khashoggi’s murder will surface during discussions, as noted by Middle East expert Cecilie Hellestveit. “Already in 2021, Biden indicated that Mohammed bin Salman would receive immunity regarding that case,” she explained, underscoring the lack of any forthcoming accountability. American courts have similarly declined to pursue legal action regarding the murder.

As per an assessment from the CIA in 2018, there was a probable indication that the crown prince had ordered the killing—a claim he has consistently denied. When pressed, Hellestveit reassured, “Human rights will certainly not be a topic of conversation.”

The primary objective of this high-profile visit seems to center on reinforcing long-standing cooperation in energy and security while also leveraging opportunities to expand trade relations, including discussions around a substantial Saudi investment package promised during the crown prince’s prior visit to the U.S. in May.

In another layer of geopolitical complexity, with a focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict forefront in negotiations at the UN Security Council, Trump’s Gaza plan hinges, in part, on Saudi Arabia playing a pivotal role. Despite recent discourse suggesting Saudi Arabia may be edging towards normalizing relations with Israel, Hellestveit remains skeptical. “Saudi Arabia has firmly established its position: normalization cannot occur without a Palestinian state,” she stated.

With discussions including not only economic ties but also public goodwill initiatives—NFL star Tom Brady and other prominent U.S. figures expected to attend revealed gala dinners—this meeting serves as a symbolic gesture of allegiance. As Trump remarked earlier, few leaders are afforded the repeated opportunities to engage with an American president, a sentiment that resonates deeply for the crown prince as he seeks to assert his leadership in the Arab world.

As the days count down to the meeting, the diplomatic wonders—couched in a veneer of camaraderie—will play out against a backdrop of complex, often controversial history that will not easily fade into the shadows.
