Ingibjörg Isaksen Contemplates Presidential Run Amidst Party Dynamics

Ingibjörg Isaksen, the parliamentary party chairman of the Progressive Party and head of the North East constituency, has signaled that she may be open to running for the party’s presidency. In recent discussions with the media, she expressed that she’s been encouraged to consider this opportunity.

This autumn, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson announced he would not seek re-election, prompting speculation about potential successors. Lilja Alfredsdóttir and Willum Þór Þórsson are among those reportedly weighing their options for candidacy. When approached about her own ambitions, Isaksen acknowledged she is contemplating her next steps.

“I haven’t made a final decision yet, as there’s still some time until the party congress in mid-February,” she stated. “Right now, though, there are vital conversations happening at the grassroots level. We’re exploring various possibilities, and I truly hope we can reach a successful outcome as we consider what’s best for our progress.”

A Distinct Stance on Immigration Policy

In a recent discussion focused on immigration, Isaksen reiterated the Progressive Party’s intention to address the issue with compassion.

When asked whether she believes her party is aligning more closely with the Central Party’s viewpoints—particularly given the latter’s rise in popularity—Isaksen quickly responded in the negative.

“They are increasingly distancing themselves from our principles,” she remarked. “We see this as an opportunity. The Independence Party and the Central Party have drawn nearer to each other in recent years, but we cannot support that direction, especially concerning immigration policies.”

As Isaksen weighs her political future, she remains firm in her commitment to a humane approach in addressing societal challenges, underscoring her dedication to the Progressive Party’s core values.
