Electricity Transmission Costs in Iceland on the Rise

The cost of electricity transmission in Iceland has nearly doubled over the past five years, putting it well ahead of many neighboring countries. Recent analyses of Landsnet’s proposed developments suggest there is little sign of that trend reversing.

Over the last decade, Landsnet has built up a substantial equity base, driven largely by high transmission fees and a revaluation of operational assets. Since 2012, the company has averaged an annual return of around seventeen percent — a figure that exceeds the profitability thresholds set by Orkustofnun, the National Energy Authority.

That financial picture raises real questions about where energy transmission in Iceland is headed, and what it means for both consumers and businesses going forward.
