Joshua Set to Face YouTube Sensation Paul in High-Stakes Bout
In a matchup that has stirred both excitement and skepticism within the boxing community, former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is scheduled to take on YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul at the Kaseya Center in Miami on December 19. This 8-round bout, each round lasting three minutes, will see both fighters donning traditional ten-ounce gloves.
At 36 years old, Joshua, who typically weighs in at around 113kg, is expected to trim down to 111kg for the fight. As reported by BBC News, boxing commentator Steve Bunce acknowledged the peculiarity of the matchup, labeling it “ridiculous.” He went on to point out that while Paul, at 28, is still a “rookie” in the ring, the financial allure of the fight for Joshua is undeniable—with earnings rumored to be around $50 million.
Bunce shed light on the financial dynamics by reminiscing about Jake Paul’s previous bout against Mike Tyson last November, which captivated an audience of approximately 300 million viewers across various platforms. “That’s a staggering number, and they were compensated to the tune of millions,” Bunce noted, emphasizing that such lucrative prospects are driving this fight.
While he expressed no qualms about Joshua capitalizing on this opportunity, especially given his philanthropic efforts, Bunce also hinted at the possibility of a future showdown between Joshua and fellow Brit Tyson Fury. However, he indicated that fans might be witnessing the twilight of Joshua’s illustrious career.
The physical disparity between the fighters is expected to be significant, with Bunce pointing out that Joshua will stand at least 15 inches taller and weigh approximately 25 kilograms more than Paul. “Let’s not forget, AJ is an Olympic champion,” Bunce reminded listeners.
Despite his limited experience, Bunce acknowledged Paul’s ability to generate buzz in the sport, calling him a “great rookie.” With Joshua’s credentials and Paul’s surprising ascent in boxing, this matchup promises to be as intriguing as it is unconventional.
