Torn Between Loyalty and Love: A Woman’s Wedding Dilemma

A woman has written to The Sun’s relationship expert, Dear Deidre, worried that her boss’s girlfriend is about to blow up her wedding before it even happens.

“I’m terrified she’ll come to my wedding and ruin everything,” the 30-year-old confides. She and her fiancé, 32, have been together for four years, but the strain of work had left them both exhausted and distant.

In that low point, she ended up in an affair with her boss — a 39-year-old man with a girlfriend and a young daughter. What started as something she thought would stay brief quickly became far more complicated.

“It didn’t seem to matter to him that I was getting married. Two weeks into our affair, he confessed that he loved me,” she recalls, well aware of what she’d got herself into.

She eventually decided to end it. Her boss didn’t take it well — he told her he would leave his girlfriend for her — but she held firm and made clear it was over.

Then came an unexpected turn. Her boss told his girlfriend everything and handed over the woman’s number. “She called me, demanding that I leave him alone. I apologized and explained that we were done,” she says. The girlfriend has kept sending threatening messages ever since, all centred on the upcoming wedding.

“I know what I did was wrong, but I’m scared she will follow through on her threats,” she admits.

Counsel from Deidre

Dear Deidre doesn’t dismiss the worry, but offers some grounding perspective. “While the girlfriend’s threats are unsettling, the reality is she would have to take extreme measures to disrupt your wedding, and it’s unlikely she will act on those threats,” she says.

Deidre’s advice is to stop looking over her shoulder and start focusing on what’s actually in front of her. “Your relationship is what matters now. Prioritize it, ensuring you both nurture it to prevent history from repeating itself.”

It’s a hard situation of her own making, but the path forward is a clear one — put the energy back into her marriage and leave the affair firmly in the past.
