SitusAMC, a company that services a range of American financial institutions, suffered a significant cyberattack earlier this month — and concerns are growing that hackers may have walked away with sensitive customer data belonging to some of the largest banks in the United States.
The company, which provides solutions for mortgage loan issuance and collections, confirmed the breach on Saturday. It warned that legal and financial data tied to the banks’ customers could have been compromised. Early reports point to information about buyers in the residential real estate market as the primary target, with no evidence so far that commercial real estate data was touched.
The attack took place on November 12. Its full scope is still unclear, but major banks including JPMorgan, Citi, and Morgan Stanley are known to use SitusAMC’s services. Experts cited by The New York Times have stressed the seriousness of the breach, noting that the company sits on a substantial volume of sensitive data — including information its clients need to meet complex legal requirements.
The FBI is now investigating. Kash Patel, the agency’s head, has told the public that the cyberattack does not, at this stage, appear to be disrupting the day-to-day operations of the U.S. banking system.
The situation is still developing, and both the companies involved and their customers are waiting to learn more.
