Flu Epidemic Sweeps the Nation, Straining Healthcare Resources

A flu epidemic has taken hold across the country, and communities are feeling it. Last week alone, twenty-one people were hospitalised because of the virus — a figure that is putting real pressure on local health centres.

Healthcare staff are adjusting their schedules to keep up with the demand. “In the past two to three weeks, we’ve noticed a marked increase in patient attendance,” says Dr. Gunnlaugur. “We’ve implemented an additional duty line, utilizing our facilities to their fullest extent with eight doctors on duty starting at 5 p.m.”

This year’s flu is hitting harder and earlier than usual. “The flu is at least a month ahead of where we typically see it, and its onset has been steep,” Dr. Gunnlaugur notes.

Part of what makes this season rougher is how the virus itself has shifted. “As the virus mutates, it becomes more dangerous. We’ve observed significant changes in the last year,” he says, pointing to symptoms that are more serious and longer-lasting than people might expect.

These kinds of changes tend to roll around roughly every decade. “Historically, every few years, we see these shifts. The last notable instance was the swine flu in 2009,” Dr. Gunnlaugur points out. “Unlike COVID-19, which adapted quickly, the flu does not change as rapidly, but it can still pose serious threats.”

Right now, people are coming in with high fever, bone pain, a sore throat, and a persistent dry cough. Dr. Gunnlaugur’s advice: slow down, rest properly, and use antipyretics to keep the fever in check.

Given how stretched services are at the moment, he is asking patients to call the on-call number before heading to the doctor’s office. He is also pushing hard for people to get their flu vaccination — it remains one of the most straightforward ways to protect yourself and those around you.
