Concerns are mounting that hackers may have made off with sensitive customer data from some of the largest banks in the United States.
SitusAMC, which specializes in providing solutions for mortgage loan issuance and collections, confirmed the breach on Saturday. The company warned that legal and financial data pertaining to the banks’ customers could have been compromised. Preliminary reports suggest that the breach targeted information about buyers in the residential real estate market, with no evidence yet indicating that commercial real estate data was affected.
Though the full impact of the attack, which occurred on November 12, remains unclear, it has been reported that major banks such as JPMorgan, Citi, and Morgan Stanley utilize SitusAMC’s services. Experts cited by The New York Times emphasize the severity of this breach, noting that the company holds a wealth of sensitive data vital for its clients, including information necessary for navigating complex legal requirements.
The FBI is now investigating the matter. Kash Patel, the agency’s head, has assured the public that, at present, the cyberattack does not appear to disrupt the daily operations of the U.S. banking system.
