Earthquake Swarm Detected Along Reykjanes Ridge
Yesterday, the Reykjanes Ridge became a focal point of seismic activity, with reports indicating over 100 earthquakes rattling the area in just a few hours. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, approximately 120 tremors were measured starting around noon.
What’s the Story?
- Seismic Surge: The sequence included a significant quake measuring 4.4 in magnitude, which struck at 16:30. This event marks the strongest tremor in the region since September.
- Magnitude Overview: Four earthquakes surpassed magnitude 4, while the majority were measured between magnitudes 1 and 2. Additionally, a number of tremors exceeded magnitude 3.
- No Volcanic Activity: Current assessments indicate no signs of volcanic disturbances, as confirmed by the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Jóhanna Malen Skúladóttir explained, “We are not seeing any volcanic activity. Of course, there could be an eruption there, but there is nothing to indicate that right now.”
The seismic events originated roughly 25 kilometers southwest of Eldey, and some of the quakes were felt in nearby populated areas. Observers recall similar seismic patterns in this region from February, and continuous monitoring is actively underway.
