Reykjavík Dance Festival Celebrates Icelandic Language Day

Date:

At long last, we’re in the midst of the exciting Reykjavík Dance Festival. A delightful array of events awaits, from graduation showcases to a politically charged retelling of Swan Lake and even a rave designed especially for infants. Our own Iryna Zubenko took the time to speak with festival organizers and performers, giving you insight into this vibrant celebration. Dive into her interviews here, and explore the full festival program here.

Today, at 17:00, the SIND Gallery will unveil the exhibition I’m Juicing. This captivating showcase features ten artists delving into sapphic love through a diverse range of mediums, including photography, textiles, video installations, and intricate beading. Join us for a joyful opening, complete with DJ Mellí setting the perfect atmosphere.

Tomorrow, don’t miss the GIANT 1000kr RECORD SALE at Mengi, kicking off at 12:00. I briefly toyed with keeping this treasure trove of records a secret to secure the best finds for myself, but I ultimately felt compelled to share. After all, my role is to keep you informed about the most exciting happenings in town—just remember to save a few gems for me!

Later in the day, H,A,K,K Gallery invites everyone to the finissage of Johanna Seelemann’s glass at 16:00. You’ll have two enticing options afterward: a cozy winter evening with the enchanting Ólöf Arnalds at Mengi at 20:00, or embrace the vibrant sounds of electronic pop with Lara at Kaffibarinn at 21:00, part of the ongoing Straumur concert series.

As we move into Sunday, we’ll celebrate the Day of the Icelandic Language—an occasion that honors the birthday of the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson. To commemorate this special day, we recommend diving into our Word Of The Issue articles or checking out a rather unique book on Icelandic curses titled Eat Frozen Sh*t!.

Iceland Dance Company: Flood Debris

Multiple dates — Borgarleikhúsið — 7,300 ISK on tix.is

Last year, the renowned artist Jónsi enveloped Hafnarhús with his captivating exhibition FLOOD. In tandem with this, dancers from the Iceland Dance Company crafted a piece inspired by the haunting experience captured within FLOOD’s rich soundscapes and enveloping ambiance. Following a successful run last year, they return to Borgarleikhúsið for additional performances, enhanced through further collaboration with Jónsi.
