Swedish Football Squad Faces Suspensions Ahead of Crucial Match
With Sweden’s World Cup play-off semi-finals on the horizon, nine players are walking a disciplinary tightrope. Alexander Isak, Isak Hien, Viktor Johansson, Emil Krafth, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Yasin Ayari, Jesper Karlström, Emil Forsberg, and Alexander Bernhardsson all risk missing the March clash if they pick up a caution in tomorrow’s match against Slovenia.
“We must be mindful of this situation,” national team captain Graham Potter said at the pre-match press conference. “We’re coming off a tough game and need to make some strategic decisions. While the match in March holds great importance for us, we also want to finish this gathering on a positive note.”
Potter was candid about how the squad is handling the pressure. “From our perspective, we prepare the players as thoroughly as possible. For Alex (Isak), the decision was made that he would not start against Switzerland.”
Victor Nilsson Lindelöf, who captains the side tomorrow, had little time for overthinking it on the pitch. “I’ve been in that situation before. You can’t step onto the pitch and worry about holding back. When you’re playing, you must give it your all,” he said.
Sweden’s match against Slovenia kicks off at 20:45. Neither team can claim a direct World Cup berth through their group, but Sweden’s win in the C division of the Nations League last year already guarantees them a place in the playoffs come March.
