Pets Now Welcome in Apartment Buildings Following New Legislation

Pet ownership in apartment buildings just got a lot simpler. Alþingi has passed a law removing the requirement to obtain consent from neighbours before keeping cats or dogs in a shared residential building.

For renters and apartment dwellers across Iceland, it’s a meaningful shift — no more knocking on doors to ask permission before bringing home a cat or a dog.

The bill was championed by Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, Inga Sæland, a member of Flokkur Fólksins. The aim is straightforward: make pet ownership a right that belongs to everyone, not just those lucky enough to live in a detached house or have agreeable neighbours.

During the vote, Liberal Reform MP Ingvar Þóroddson put it plainly: “This is fundamentally about freedom and fairness. Everyone should have the same rights to own pets, whether they’re in a multi-dwelling unit or a single-family home.” He rounded off his remarks with a grin, adding “Ég segi mjá” — a pun that landed well in the chamber and said everything about the spirit of the bill.
