On November 21, commemorating her 60th birthday, the renowned Icelandic artist Björk took a bold step by filing a lawsuit against the Icelandic state concerning sea-based fish farming practices in the country.
This legal action is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by AEGIS, an environmental group that Björk founded two years ago, coinciding with the release of her collaboration with Rosalía, the song “Oral.” All proceeds from this track have been dedicated to furthering AEGIS’s mission.
In a recent Instagram post, Björk, along with AEGIS, detailed the four significant cases that the funds from “Oral” have supported. These include efforts to help the residents of Seyðisfjörður halt the licensing of a fish farm in their community, a comprehensive legal examination of marine spatial planning in the area, the Icelandic Wildlife Fund’s pursuit to annul fish farm permits in both Tálknafjörður and Patreksfjörður, and a summoning of the Icelandic state aimed at putting a stop to a fish farm in Sandeyri, which has been established against the wishes of local inhabitants.
This multifaceted approach illustrates Björk’s commitment to environmental advocacy, reflecting a deep concern for the delicate balance between industry and nature in Iceland.
