Embracing Christmas Scents: Advent Around the Home

Date:

Jewelry designer Hildur Hafstein has taken center stage as the cover story of Morgunblaðin’s Christmas magazine, which hit the stands this morning. This special 128-page edition delves into the spirit of the season, filled with tales of joy and preparation for the holidays.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Hildur at her charming home in Kópavogur. The space was beautifully adorned for the season, reflecting her creative spirit. Dressed in a dazzling sequined gown from the Rotate collection, she complemented her look with exquisite pieces crafted from her own workshop. Hildur also operates a boutique under her name, located at Klaparstíg 40.

Reflecting on the holiday season, Hildur shares, “Christmas at home feels quite different from the hustle and bustle of the shop. While there’s certainly a lot to manage, we prefer a more laid-back atmosphere. We skip the exhaustive cleaning marathons and the ritualistic holiday concerts. Our traditions are simply about going with the flow—though I do love putting up the Christmas tree early, relishing the festive lights without a rigid schedule.”

As for her Christmas preparations, Hildur admits, “I always strive to start early, but inevitably find myself scrambling at the last minute! Procrastination can be a hurdle, especially during the festive season. By the start of Advent, the house is enveloped in delightful scents—cake, fir, and cinnamon fill the air. Christmas is always on its way, even if I haven’t checked everything off my to-do list,” she chuckles.

When asked about traditions she has left behind, Hildur reminisces, “I used to bake gingerbread cookies with my boys when they were younger, adorning them with colorful icing. Unfortunately, my culinary skills are somewhat limited—thankfully, my partner and boys share that sentiment! Yet, I hold onto the hope of reviving that tradition with my little granddaughter.”
