Pirate Party Chairmanship Race Narrows as Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir Exits

The contest for the Pirate Party’s first-ever chair just got a lot smaller. Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir, a well-known city representative, has announced she is pulling out of the race. That leaves two candidates in contention: Alexandra Briem, a city councilor, and Oktavía Hrund Guðrúnar Jóns, the executive director of the Pirate Party.

Dóra Björt broke the news on Facebook, pointing to the friction her proposed structural changes had stirred up inside the party. The reaction was stronger than she expected, and the situation contributed to some members resigning — something she had not anticipated.

Her vision had included open conversations about a possible name change and a broader ideological tent. “I feel we should not continue our drift further to the left, a trend I perceive in recent years,” she said. Those ideas did not land well with parts of the membership, and the fallout has been hard to ignore.

She was clear that division was never her goal. “I never intended to foster division within our ranks,” Dóra Björt said. With that in mind, she has chosen to step aside rather than let her candidacy become a source of ongoing conflict. “At this moment, I believe it’s not prudent to complicate our future. It’s vital that we seek harmony as we consider our next steps.”

Her withdrawal is a significant moment for the Pirate Party as it heads into this leadership transition.

Stay tuned for further updates.
