Mathematics performance in Sweden has been falling for years, and the pressure to act is growing. Teach for Sweden is responding by training more teachers — with a particular focus on getting support to students earlier, before gaps become harder to close.

Moa Rönnhagen, who is training to become a teacher in Gällivare, believes the key is making math feel relevant. “It’s crucial to connect mathematical concepts to their everyday experiences,” she says. That kind of grounding, she argues, is what turns reluctant students into engaged ones. Teach for Sweden hopes that approach — scaled up through more recruits like Rönnhagen — can begin to turn around the country’s slide in mathematics education.
