easyJet Launches Inaugural Manchester to Akureyri Flight

This morning easyJet operated its first ever flight from Manchester to Akureyri, bringing a direct connection to North Iceland from a second UK departure point. The airline now runs the route alongside its existing service from London Gatwick, with both operating twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The Manchester route was announced this spring, building on a London service that got off to a strong start last winter. Travellers in both the UK and Iceland have responded well, and tour operators are already working out how to use the extra connectivity to put together winter packages for North Iceland — giving visitors more time on the ground to take in the landscapes and culture of the region.

When the flights were first unveiled, Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager, made clear how much the airline values the route. “We are delighted to be launching a second route this winter to Akureyri from Manchester Airport,” Gayward remarked. “As the only airline offering a direct connection between the UK and Northern Iceland, this new service complements our existing route from London Gatwick. It enhances choice and connectivity for travelers in both regions. We are committed to supporting the development of tourism in Iceland and eagerly await welcoming more passengers aboard this winter.”

On hand for the occasion were Chris Hagan and Halldór Óli from Visit North Iceland, together with Hjördís Þórhallsdóttir, the manager of Akureyri International Airport — all marking what feels like a genuine step forward for access to this part of the country.
