Instead, multiple volcanic systems appear to be interacting across the peninsula in ways that existing models have not fully captured. Officials say this complexity is precisely what makes forecasting so difficult.

The peninsula itself sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart at roughly 2.5 centimetres per year. That geological context makes it one of the most tectonically active regions in Iceland — and, by extension, on Earth. But activity at this scale and frequency was not recorded in any living memory before 2020, which means scientists are effectively building understanding in real time.

Researchers note that the systems beneath the peninsula do not behave in isolation. Magma movement under one part of the ridge can influence pressure and stress elsewhere along the same corridor, making it genuinely difficult to isolate cause and effect. For residents of the Reykjanes Peninsula — and particularly for the people of Grindavík, who were evacuated multiple times following eruptions and ground subsidence — the scientific uncertainty has very practical consequences. Emergency planners and civil protection authorities rely on Met Office assessments when deciding whether evacuation orders should be issued or lifted.

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, one of Iceland’s most visited attractions and located just a few kilometres from the Svartsengi volcanic system, has also been affected by the ongoing unrest. It closed temporarily during the most recent eruption cycle and has become something of a barometer for the state of activity in the area.

Still, daily life continues across most of the peninsula. The main road from Reykjavík to Keflavík International Airport — Route 41 — passes through the affected zone, and authorities have repeatedly had to assess whether it remains safe for the roughly 3.5 million passengers who pass through Keflavík each year.

The broader scientific challenge on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Iceland’s scientific institutions have long been respected internationally for their volcanological expertise. The University of Iceland, in cooperation with the Met Office and the Icelandic Institute of Earth Sciences, maintains some of the densest networks of seismometers and GPS sensors found anywhere on a volcanic landmass. Even so, officials acknowledge that the tools and models currently in use were largely developed for monitoring individual volcanic systems — not the kind of diffuse, peninsula-wide unrest now under way.

International partners, including researchers from the United States Geological Survey and several European universities, have been collaborating with Icelandic scientists throughout the current eruptive period. The call for more research reflects an honest assessment that the data being collected has outpaced the theoretical frameworks needed to interpret it fully.

The Met Office has not indicated a specific timeline for when a clearer picture might emerge. What scientists do agree on is that the Reykjanes Peninsula is likely to remain active for years, possibly decades, to come — and that the work of understanding it is far from finished.

How that research effort is structured, and what it ultimately reveals about the peninsula’s long-term behaviour, will shape both scientific thinking and civil protection policy in Iceland for a generation.
