A sequence of Iceland earthquakes struck two separate areas overnight — the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest and the region west of Langjökull near Húsafell — according to Morgunblaðið (mbl.is).
Seismic swarms affecting multiple locations simultaneously are not unusual in Iceland, which sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. But two active zones lighting up in the same night draws attention from geologists and residents alike. The Reykjanes Peninsula in particular has been in a prolonged period of heightened seismic and volcanic activity since 2020.
Where the Iceland earthquakes were felt
The first cluster was centred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the roughly 50-kilometre arm of land that extends southwest from Reykjavík and is home to Keflavík International Airport. The peninsula has seen repeated eruptions and persistent unrest at several volcanic systems in recent years, making any new seismic swarm there a matter of close monitoring.

The second swarm occurred to the west of Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, in the area around Húsafell. That inland district — known to many travellers as a gateway to the Hraunfossar lava waterfalls and the Kaldidalur highland road — sits in a geologically active corridor between the Western Volcanic Zone and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Earthquakes in this zone are less frequent than on Reykjanes but not unheard of.
Reports did not specify the precise magnitudes of the individual quakes in either swarm, nor whether any damage or injuries were recorded. Icelandic authorities and Veðurstofa Íslands — the Icelandic Meteorological Office, which monitors seismic activity around the clock — routinely assess such events and publish updates on their earthquake portal.
Reykjanes unrest: a pattern that has not let up
For residents of the Reykjanes Peninsula, overnight tremors have become a familiar disruption. Since the volcanic system near Fagradalsfjall reawakened in March 2021, the peninsula has experienced multiple eruptions, ground deformation, and near-constant low-level seismicity. The town of Grindavík, about 50 kilometres southwest of Reykjavík, has borne the worst of it — evacuated more than once as lava advanced toward its streets.

The latest swarm adds to that longer story of unrest. Whether it signals a new escalation or simply reflects background noise in an already restless system is something scientists will assess over the coming hours and days.
Meanwhile, the Húsafell-area activity is a reminder that seismic risk in Iceland is not confined to the southwest. The country straddles two tectonic plates — the Eurasian and North American — that are pulling apart at roughly two centimetres per year, feeding volcanic and seismic systems from the Reykjanes Peninsula in the south all the way to Öxarfjörður in the northeast.
What travellers and residents should watch for
For most people, earthquake swarms of moderate size cause no structural danger and pass without incident. Iceland’s building codes account for seismic activity, and Reykjavík’s older concrete apartment blocks — the kind that line Hlemmur and Laugarás — are built to flex rather than crack. Still, anyone near the epicentres overnight may have felt the tremors clearly.

Travellers driving the Reykjanes Peninsula — whether heading to or from Keflavík Airport on the Reykjanesbraut, or visiting the Blue Lagoon — are advised to check Veðurstofan’s live earthquake map and any civil protection notices before travelling through areas of active unrest. Road closures and exclusion zones can be imposed quickly when activity escalates.
Veðurstofa Íslands is expected to publish further analysis as data from the overnight swarms is processed. Scientists at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences also monitor these systems continuously and typically issue assessments when swarm activity is notable.
