Google Calendar Now Lets You Block Time Without Fake Meetings

Date:

In a significant enhancement, Google Calendar has rolled out a new feature that allows users to seamlessly block off time for tasks while marking themselves as busy. This update, which expands on the existing Tasks functionality, addresses a request that many Workspace users have been voicing. Now, tasks can be managed much like meetings, with users given the flexibility to set and adjust specific time blocks. This means you can also activate a “do not disturb” setting and automatically decline incoming meeting requests during your designated focus times. While you can assign a deadline to your tasks, it’s important to note that, for now, only the date can be specified—specific deadline times are not yet available.

For those who rely on their calendars to manage their workloads, this update may be the realization of what you always wanted from the Tasks feature. Since its inception as a standalone app in 2018, Tasks has undergone a series of updates, including recently integrated reminders from Google Keep and the introduction of completion dates. This latest feature will be accessible to all Workspace customers, as well as individual subscribers and personal Gmail users. The rollout began on November 6 for Rapid Release domains, with wider access expected by mid-December.

For planner enthusiasts or those accustomed to Outlook’s similar functionality, this enhancement could prove invaluable in managing your workday while signaling to colleagues when you need uninterrupted time. Unlike the pre-existing “Focus Time” feature, the newly updated Tasks feature allows you to dedicate time slots specifically to individual tasks.

To explore this new capability, simply navigate to your Google Calendar and select “Task” from the options displayed when you click on an empty time block.
