If you have a passion for the picturesque charm of traditional Icelandic timber houses, the new old town in Selfoss will undoubtedly capture your heart.
Nestled along the stunning south coast, Selfoss stands as the largest town in the region, home to around 9,500 residents. Until recently, it was easy to overlook, at least in terms of tourist attractions. However, 2021 marked a transformative moment for the town.
That year, a remarkable new town center was unveiled. While the buildings are newly constructed, they evoke the nostalgia of bygone eras, as they are meticulously designed to replicate older wooden structures that have long since disappeared from Iceland’s landscape.
A handful of these charming recreations draw inspiration from Selfoss itself, while others hail from various corners of the country. What’s even more exciting is that this project is just getting started. Plans are underway for an impressive cluster of over 30 houses, with several new ones already under construction.
If you ask me, it’s a brilliant initiative—one that resonates with anyone who has an affection for historical architecture. It seems I’m not alone in this sentiment; the new town center has blossomed into a significant attraction for visitors, surpassing all initial expectations. This is a heartening development for such a grand undertaking.
So, make sure not to just drive through Selfoss! This vibrant area deserves a stop for refreshments and a leisurely stroll, particularly when the sun is shining.
